Tesuque Pueblo (Te-Tsu-Ge) Route 11, Box 1 Santa Fe, NM 87501 505-983-2667 Reservation Population: 702 Language: Tewa Located just north of Santa Fe on US Highway 64/285, Tesuque Pueblo was established around 1250. The modern-day village was established in 1694. Its visitor services include an RV park and the Camel Rock Casino. A number of art galleries in the village are open to visitors. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pojoaque Pueblo (P'o Suwae-Geh) Route 11, Box 71 Santa Fe, NM 87501 505-455-2278 Reservation Population: 2,481 (only about 6% tribal members) Language: Tewa One of the six Tewa-speaking villages, Pojoaque has revitalized itself after near-extinction in the early 1900's, and now offers a new museum, the Poeh Cultural Center, a visitor's center, hotel, and the Cities of Gold Casino. It is the smallest of New Mexico's Pueblos. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Nambé Pueblo (Nambe) Route 1, Box 117-BB Santa Fe, NM 87501 (505) 455-7692 Reservation Population: 1,358 Language: Tewa Nambe is situated in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Originally established around AD 1300, the village is now a National Historic Landmark. Its beautiful setting, including lakes, waterfalls, and mountain terrain, is a major tourist draw. Visitor services include camping facilities, fishing, art galleries, and organized tours. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ San Ildefonso Pueblo (P'o-Woh-Ge-Owinge) Route 5, Box 315-A Santa Fe, NM 87501 (505) 455-2273 Reservation Population: 1,586 Language: Tewa San Ildefonso is located on the Rio Grande River, on the flanks of the Jemez Mountains. San Ildefonso is famed for its pottery. Two of its members, Julian and Maria Martinez, developed a distinctive polished black-on-black pottery form in the 1920s which continues to be popular today with artists and collectors. Visitors are very welcome, but the village is closed to outsiders at various times throughout the year for religious observances, so check beforehand. There are numerous shops in the Pueblo which sell high quality Native art and crafts. |
